Taking Care Of Your Window Air Conditioner

Taking Care Of Your Window Air Conditioner

One of the most popular inventions of the 20th century, about 84 percent of U.S. homes have some type of air conditioning. Although central systems are all the rage, millions of Americans still use window-mounted A/C units.  These devices are generally a lot cheaper than other cooling systems, but they do require more maintenance.

Every time a window unit is removed or replaced, it should be thoroughly cleaned. Failure to do so may reduce operating efficiency and increase the risk of wear and tear. Here are a few of the steps you should take before using or storing a portable A/C unit:

  • Check the filter for accumulated dust, dirt, and debris. If it is a disposable filter, replace it before using the unit. (During periods of heavy usage, such as the summer months, disposable A/C filters should be replaced at least once a month.)
  • If dirty, clean the condenser coils. This will help your A/C run more efficiently. Use an old tooth brush or a rag to remove caked-on dirt and grime.
  • Clean the air conditioner cover from the inside out. Grates, vents, and frames can get mighty dirty in only a few months of storage. Use a hose and some soapy water to return it to its former glory.
