Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips

Although steady and dependable, air conditioners are not maintenance free. They should be cleaned and inspected at least twice a year–when installed and when stored.  Failure to do so often results in a decline in performance and an increase in energy costs. Here are five things you can do to keep your A/C humming along.

Clean or change the air filters

All air conditioners need access to outside air to do their job. When normal airflow is obstructed, A/C units must work harder, i.e., use more energy.  This problem can often be solved by cleaning out the air filters, which allows the unit to breathe and can reduce energy consumption by up to 15 percent!

Clean A/C coils

Over time, dirt, dust, and other debris can find its way inside your A/C, where it may accumulate on the evaporator and condenser coils. These are the parts that actually cool the warm air before pumping it into your home. When dirty, these coils cannot do their jobs as efficiently.  That is why it is important to clean them at least twice a year.

Unclog condensate drains

An obstructed condensate drain may prevent your A/C from reducing humidity. Use a toothbrush or a stiff wire to unblock it.
